As the end of 2012 approaches, we thought it’d be nice to have an update from our beloved city curators. Lisa Lang in Berlin shares some of her most appreciated events, spaces and top moments of 2012.

Best event for meeting people?

To be honest, I don’t have a ‘best’ event. Berlin offers so many meetups and events – it is hard to say what is the best as everyones taste/needs are different.

Best event for content shared and learnings?

A highlight in town is definitely the Berlin Geekettes – they just launched the mentorship program for women in tech which will help a lot of people accelerate their careers and lives. Another event are the workshops by the Open Tech School – great place to get started with coding!

Personal event stye preference (breakfast/conference/workshop/etc/etc)?

I love the ‘first presentation then drinks’ events – get more knowledge and networking in one evening is the perfect mix.

Favourite source of local community news?

Twitter, SiliconAllee, uberlin.

Favourite coworking space?

Agora Collective is my absolute favourite, but a bit away from Mitte. Betahaus is still a great place to work in central Berlin.

Favourite cafe with wifi?

At the moment Vis a Vis as it close to my university. Melbourne Canteen is cool and has the best poached eggs in town.

What’s been a personal highlight and not so high moment of the year?

Personal highlights where the launch of my Smashing Book No. #3, hosting almost 10,000 people at Campus Party in Berlin and the launch of the Berlin Geekettes Mentorship Program. Not so high moment was the death of Stephen Richards Covey.

What have you enjoyed about being involved with The Fetch in 2012?

Getting to know more awesome events in town and meeting so many passionate people.

What are you looking forward to in 2013?

Berlin is going to reach another level in 2013. I know a number of events coming to town, more startups and more investors. It will be fast, hard, crazy and absolutely mind-blowing.

Best event for meeting people?

Silicon Beach Perth. It’s the most informal of our regular meetups, and a great chance to meet new people.

Best event for content shared and learnings?

Morning Startup. But I’ll admit a bit of bias here…

Personal event stye preference (breakfast/conference/workshop/etc/etc)?

Pass. Don’t have one.

Favourite source of local community news?

I presume you mean, besides The Fetch? Really, in Perth there’s been a lack of a single source for news and events focussed on our digital/design/entrepreneur community. When it comes to news, I take a bit of a grazing approach – I try to consume the best bits from several different pastures.

Favourite coworking space?

Spacecubed. Sync Labs if it’s Friday night.

Favourite cafe with wifi?

Moore & Moore in Fremantle.

What’s been a personal highlight and not so high moment of the year?

This year I celebrated my fifth wedding anniversary. Definitely a highlight. Lowlights this year have predominantly been the kind of setbacks we’re all challenged with. Nothing to complain about, thankfully.

What have you enjoyed about being involved with The Fetch in 2012?

The Fetch has given me a great excuse to ask some detailed questions of people. I really have enjoyed learning about some of the characters that make up our community. I’d like to thank those who agreed to be interviewed for sharing with us – I really appreciate it.

What are you looking forward to in 2013?

There are a couple of projects in the works here that have the potential to give coherence and momentum to our community. I’m excited to see how they develop, and to contribute if I can.

Curator Year in Review 2012: Kat in Melbourne

With 2013 just around the corner, we continue our update from our beloved city curators. Last but not least, Kat Loughrey in Melbourne, aka @KatLoughrey, highlights some of her most appreciated events, spaces and top moments of 2012.

Best event for meeting people?
The best thing about Melbourne is that I have found it incredibly easy to meet people at every event I’ve attended. I think that comes down to the fact the people who choose to attend these events, go with the right attitude and an open mind. That said, I think I always walk away with a few more contacts after attending the monthly Silicon Beach Drinks. Great atmosphere and a very open environment for networking and making new friends.

Best event for content shared and learnings?
I’ve been on a journey of discovery in 2012 since joining The Fetch and have been suitably impressed with the digital, creative and startup scenes in Melbourne – namely everyone’s desire to learn, share and grow individually and collectively. I really like the WeTeachMe Speed Teaching events and the Social Media Club Melbourne nights, plus I think if you’re in the non-profit arena, then NetSquared is the place to be.

The Socialmelb Unconference earlier this year was memorable and a great introduction to this exciting world of learning and networking that’s happening in Melbourne – and that I fear that too many Melbournians just aren’t well aware of yet. That’s where The Fetch steps in.

All in all, we’re spoiled for choice in Melbourne – and if you can take away just one learning from each meetup you attend, then I think you’ve succeeded.

Personal event style preference (breakfast/conference/workshop/etc/etc)?
I love the more informal vibe and atmosphere of the smaller meetups, over a large-scale conference. It provides a better chance to meet people and have more meaningful conversations. I also think they fit in better with our busy time-poor schedules. I’ve still learnt a lot from some of the big conferences I’ve attended such as iStrategy though. You just need to approach a large-scale conference with a different mindset.

Favourite source of local community news?
Without a doubt – Twitter – and utilising the list functionality to (try to) stay across as much as possible happening in Melbourne. Facebook comes in a close second, with LinkedIn increasingly becoming a relevant source for community news as well.

Favourite coworking space?
Definitely a throw up between Inspire9, York Butter Factory and Hub Melbourne. All fabulous spaces that if I wasn’t working in a full time job, would aspire to do coworking at.

Favourite cafe with wifi?
I can’t go past 1000 Pound Bend, where the Social Melbourne breakfasts are held. The State Library of Victoria and its café, Mr Tulk, are also worthy of an inclusion. Now if only I could take my coffee into the library to work/read, that’d be perfect!

What’s been a personal highlight and not so high moment of the year?
The inaugural dinner for The Fetch we had at TrunkTown in September. Stimulating conversation and great people. That was brilliant to be a part of and I can’t wait for us to do another one.

Low point? There hasn’t really been one, though attending the iStrategy conference still sick with a chest infection and a fever wasn’t exactly how I had pictured myself feeling when I was networking – but yet I still took 15 pages of notes and met some lovely people!

What have you enjoyed about being involved with The Fetch in 2012?
In the short time I’ve been involved with The Fetch, a lot of my work has been behind the scenes, so getting out from behind the desk, attending industry meetups that were new to me and spreading the word of The Fetch with our slick business cards has been the most enjoyable aspects. As mentioned before, The Fetch Dinner was also a serious highlight.

I love the adventure of unearthing new events and happenings, as well as being inspired and motivated by the determination of others that I’ve met across a diverse range of roles and industries.

What are you looking forward to in 2013?
That’s easy – attending more events and happenings, and taking The Fetch to a wider audience!

I am also really looking forward to working with the Community Ambassadors further to develop more content for The Fetch and make more contacts (and friends!).

In regards to events – seeing the arrival of The School of Life to Melbourne.

I’m also excited to see the current meetup groups and conferences evolve grow further, as well as the further development of General Assembly and TEDxMelbourne.

Curator Year in Review 2012: Chloe in London

As the end of 2012 approaches, we thought it’d be nice to have an update from our beloved city curators. To kick us off, Chloe Nicholls in London, aka @ThatGirl_Chloe, highlights some of her most appreciated events, spaces and top moments of 2012.

Best event for meeting people? 

Any of the events organised by @3Beards i.e. SiliconDrinkabout, Digital SizzleDon’t Pitch Me Bro – these guys have really revived the tech and startup scene in London.

Best event for content shared and learnings? 

General Assembly London for key learnings and workshops, and some favourite  conferences and events include Social Media WeekInternet Week EuropeleWeb LondonReMixMind the Product and Wired 2012

Personal event stye preference? 

Although I attend many conferences and big events every year, I prefer smaller panels and workshops, with a great MC who can ask direct questions – not only to the panel but to the audience too and get a debate going. I find that it’s the people in the audience who sometimes have the most interesting answers/points of view rather than the speakers or panel.

Favourite source of local community news? 

Twitter and Facebook is where I find out all my industry goss!

Favourite coworking space? 

For the creatives The Hospital Club and for the techies Google Campus and Central Working (great coworking spaces and cafe even if it’s sometimes bursting at the seams).

Favourite cafe with wifi? 

The Breakfast Club! (Good place for breakfast, lunch or both; brunch – plus they have great wifi access). 

What’s been a personal highlight and not so high moment of the year? 

Heading to SXSW with my team from Newspepper and low light, bit of an obvious one, but the summer rain before the London 2012 Olympics – it was endless rain for about one month.

What have you enjoyed about being involved with The Fetch in 2012?

The Fetch has been a great way to tap into London’s tech, business and creative communities and keep up-to-date on going on for professionals. By curating the newsletter, I get to discover new  events and share them with the rest of the community. I’ve definitely met some interesting characters along the way!

What are you looking forward to in 2013? 

I can’t wait to start hosting The Fetch Conversations – which are thought-leader dinners for The Fetch community plus continue to work with our brilliant Community Ambassadors and build the community for a wider audience.

Quit watching and start doing: Sport Business in London

Despite hosting the biggest sporting event of the year, Londoners seem to be divided in their opinion about the Olympic Games. On one hand, you have the supporters who are proud that their city is featuring on the biggest stage of all. On the other, you have the sceptics who bemoan the inconvenience and alleged waste of money.

As residents of the host city, we have been exposed to aspects of the games that the rest of the world won’t be aware of. One of these, commercial rights, has at times been a controversial topic as the London Organising Committee (LOCOG) has clamped down hard on any company that they deem to be infringing the rights of their major sponsors.

No doubt this will have piqued the interest of many marketing professionals who may be coming across the business side of the sports industry for the first time. They might well be seduced by it and who could blame them? It’s a glamorous mix of high profile stars and huge amounts of money.

The same may well apply to various other professionals too, such as events or media. But how do you go about getting a job in sports?

First and foremost, you need to be able to prove that you have transferable skills. In that respect, it’s no different from moving between any other industries. But this shouldn’t prove to be a much of a barrier for professionals from the industries mentioned earlier.

What’s equally important is networking. As the old cliché goes, it’s not just what you know but who you know.

The good news is that the sports industry is relatively small and there are several dedicated networking events throughout the year.

The Sport Business Group, organise many of the most high profile conferences throughout the year, such as sports Marketing 360 which takes place on 27 September. While the line-up for this year’s conference hasn’t been announced yet, previous speakers have included representatives from many of the UK’s top sports marketing organisations such as Synergy and Octagon and governing bodies like Premiership Rugby. Another company specialising in networking events is the Sports Industry Group. They organise one of the most high profile events in the sports industry calendar, the Sports Industry Awards. They also organise a range of smaller events throughout the year including the Sports Industry Breakfast Club and the Sports Industry Lecture which also feature high profile speakers. So if you’re thinking about moving into the sports industry, now could be the time. Sport is very much on the agenda at the moment and the legacy of the Olympic Games should provide some interesting opportunities. It’s up to you to find them.
